You know that dowdy-eyed, super sexy, elegantly nonchalant and proverbially chic girl you see around, maybe on the train, maybe on Newbury, even in your school café perhaps? Then you overhear her speak for the first time and her lips whisper some type of melodic foreign melody, a deep French accent, possibly. She is always dressed so stylishly simple yet seemingly impossible to imitate. You see, nonchalance is in right now but no one is ready for a bore. There is a very specific look that needs to be pulled off and the easiest way to transform a simply boring ensemble to a blasé yet chic composition is with the use of the all friendly blazer and doubtlessly, a pair of heels. A simple blazer that has been sitting in the back of your closet gifted from grandma will not due. Ergo, spend some time shopping for your best blazer that will add some sort of chic emphasis to your outfit and pair it with your favorite signature pumps. Granted, this pairing could even make a pair of sweatpants go unnoticed. While that may be an exaggeration, you could definitely pair it with a t-shirt and a pair of jeans, even harem pants and you will most certainly be noticed for your fashionable appeal.

What To Buy When - Floral Mini-Dress

It has snowed already?! Welcome to New England, home of the friendly yet far too early flurries. It seems that we may be skipping fall this year, but our whether is actually too bipolar for that so expect some very warm days, some beautiful fall days, and some freezing snowy days. While it is difficult to dress accordingly there is one thing you should keep in your closet year round – a mini-dress. This season let’s defy the odds and go a step further and indulge in a floral mini-dress. We may be far out of bounds in terms of winter attire but do not let the weather dampen your joviality. A floral dress can be paired with your favorite tights and boots for those chilly days. Throw on a blazer for the full fall effect; just do not shove it to the back of your closet until summer. We may be over it by then anyhow.

Bring out your inner eighties rocker chick and exude a heightened level of confidence this season. It is all about bold shapes and different textures coming together to make a statement. This look can easily serve as a comfortable simple outfit for the day. Then, with a pair of heels and maybe even a blazer there may be no need to completely change for a night out. You will definitely turn heads with this look whether you are sitting at your favorite tea spot on Newbury or if you’re jumping around at your best friends’ band playing at Bill’s. Either way, you’ll look pretty badass.

What to Buy When - Statement Shoe

Now, we are all preparing for fall and returning back to that super dandy routine of class, work, study, and play and there are a few things you may want to come to terms with in your closet. One, make a nice trip to a goodwill and give them any wedged heel you may own. While you are at it you may want to toss out those pumps from last season with the wooden heels. Now that you have some space and potentially some extra money from proud parents or family members go ahead and get yourself a statement shoe. This shoe does not need to be over the top, but you want something comfortable, elegant, with a bold structure and some serious height.

There is no need for your lady friends to outdress you. Get over the super casual male attitude and adopt a more tailored look. Guys everywhere are beginning to throw in bits of color in their everyday wear, which is no longer super casual. Guess what tops the look off completely... a bowtie. Remember those odd things that no one ever really knew how to tie - no need for all of that, they come ready made. The have all different types and sizes, colors and textures. There's one out there to fit what ever creed you maintain. They will be all over soon, so why not jump on the bandwagon first.

Audrey, meet Aerosmith. Not really, but you get the point. Take your Breakfast at Tiffany's inspiration and let it mesh with your rock inspired pieces. One trend that we will not bid farewell anytime soon is the habitual feminine-masculine combo. So, yes, putting a heavy studded belt on top of your ultra feminine Isabella Louis skirt will definitely work. Do not be afraid to experiment with the harder, grungier side of your fashion personality. Go for leather, biker gloves, chains and studs but do not lose touch with your femininity. A studded belt on top of a floral print or a ballet inspired tulle skirt can do wonders.
This “femculine” trend does not just reside in accessories. We have all become familiar with the ‘boyfriend’ clothes. This means your super skin tight mini dress will look pleasing under your slightly oversized, cuffed at the wrists boyfriend blazer. It is a beautiful combination actually, and do not fear the heels. Going on with the boyfriend trend, do not fear your boyfriend pants with a lace camisole and a pair of pumps. Now, we do not mean ‘90s baggy because, of course, boyfriends are now wearing skinny jeans, if you’re lucky, that is.

Fall 2009 is a chance for you to revel in your economic depression and give yourself a reason to play dress up in any decade but your own.

Applaud yourself for being trapped in the eighties for some strange reason, with lace trims, broad shoulders, floral prints, and the occasional unconventional color scheme. Let’s make this clear right now, fashionable eighties influence is not just about crazy neon colors thrown together to blind old people and children, nor is it about wearing oversized hoodies made of the swishy material people used to work out in. It is about implementing the essence of the jovial period where people were not afraid of second hand shops and shoulder pads, when they liked big skirts and oversized bows. Ladies were not afraid to pack on the pearls and mix them in with heavy chains and studs. Pretty little ballerina flats could be considered boring when girls were wearing their super chic dresses and skirts with Doc Martins, jazz shoes, over zealous pumps even. People were becoming aware of fabric choices, knowing what was flattering, what would move, more so, what would bring the effect of total fashionista dominance. Now, imagine all of that mixed in with the fact that we’re in the 21st Century, 2009, almost a decade into it. Do you remember what they were thinking in the eighties about 2009? Yes, flying cars, crazy alien-like body suits, metallic cuffs. Are you getting what I’m saying here? Take the essence of the eighties and mix it with a futuristic theme. Do a Balmain-like, eighties inspired shoulder in a bright metallic, a silver. Have fun with color choices and do it in a rich emerald green, a deep purple, a mustard yellow, a royal blue, a pink! Oh, the choices.

Now, let us not forget we faced some pretty harsh economic times in the eighties, too. What is there better to do when you are facing economic hardship than to partake in nostalgia? Fashion icons in the eighties were looking at some 50’s/60’s icons. The guys were putting on their bow ties, looking dapper in their blazers, and wearing their pants just as tight as their female counterparts. No one could get the image of Marlon Brando, James Dean, Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe out of their minds. Any of that sound familiar? Probably because you are experiencing that right now. How utterly flawless was Marilyn’s beauty and James Dean’s poise? Who did not love Audrey’s buoyancy or Brando’s simple sex appeal? Look back to the fifties and sixties. Watch some great films, take a trip to a doo wop concert and just live in that moment. Let their inspiration guide your fashion choices.

Now, as much as those lost pennies hurt our pockets, no one can forget the looming decade of depression. No matter how heavy people were being financial hit, the conspicuous consumption was out of the roof as people made attempts to keep their declining class status on a hush. This was one of the most fabulous fashion decades we have seen, ironically in contrast to the financial situation the country was dealing with. People were loosing life savings but out came the sequin and the dancing shoes, the fabulous hats and the over dramatic waist coats. Now does any of that sound familiar?

Fall 2009 reeks with nostalgia. If you do not like the stench, that is unfortunate because our decade is lost, completely lost in the past. When people look back and remember the first decade of the twenty first century they will remember it as a time of nostalgia with no identification of its own besides the fact that we are absolutely capable of emulating every single decade fashion has seen and blending them together beautifully. That is a unique and original manifestation of its own. Whether we take our influence from Victorian England to a mere twenty years ago, this is your time to indulge in your favorite historical fashion moments. Do not shy away from the odd, creative impulses you are feeling or your heavy desire to shop vintage.

78 Degrees and Sunny

The shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops are out...but not all fashionable. The sun is flamming and the heat can be unbearable for any fashionista who wants to look their best yet still live through the weather. No worries... you're safe...there is no need to pull that Old Navy from Day to Night dress out or those childhood cargo shorts you can still look your best even with the sun blazing down.

One thing you want to keep in mind is fabric...we are not all experts on fabrics but if it feels light and seems like it will move it will do today. Skirts and simple tops will work. Stay away from light cotton, esp. if you think you may sweat - not a pleasant sight. If you are anti-bare leg you can still wear your tights...go for the sheers ones, or rip them up a bit. We still are not bringing in fish nets but experiment. Short sleeves are a must today and try to stay away from the dark colors or Mr. Sun will shine down on you - and he will shine HARD. Mini dresses are great today, avoid the polyester and spandex...avoid the beachwear....avoid the elastic bands around the breast region. If you are going for shorts... think light fabric and stay away from denim or the loose strings (not okay this summer). Keep it classic.

Guys - you can get away with a lot more...shorts and a nice short sleeve shirt will work with the right footwear. You may even want to bring out a cool fitted... not the same old Boston fitted but something a little more new era.

As far as accessories go...stay minimal, the extra weight can be a burden today.
